Proofreading
Proofreading that catches what everyone else missed
After editing and design, one more careful read is the cheapest insurance a book can buy. Our proofreaders check the final pages for typos, punctuation, consistency and layout slips so readers see your book at its best.
- Final-pass check on laid-out pages
- Typos, punctuation, spacing and hyphenation
- Layout issues such as widows, orphans and broken headings
- Corrections marked clearly for easy review
The last line of defence between your book and your readers
By the time a manuscript reaches proofreading, it has been written, revised, edited and designed. Everyone involved has read it many times, which is exactly why errors survive: the brain fills in what it expects to see. A fresh, trained pair of eyes at the end of the process finds what familiarity hides.
Proofreading is different from editing. We do not restructure your chapters or rework your sentences. We compare the final laid-out pages against your approved text, then check spelling, punctuation, spacing, hyphenation, capitalisation, numbering, running heads, page numbers, table of contents entries and the many small details that make a book look professionally produced.
Where we spot something that might be an error but might be deliberate, we query it rather than silently changing it, because the final decision always belongs to you. We return clear, consistent corrections so your designer or you can apply them quickly and confidently.
Why authors choose our proofreading service
Fresh eyes at the right moment
We read your pages after layout, when the final text is in place, which is the only point at which layout errors can be found.
Layout as well as language
We flag awkward line breaks, widows and orphans, inconsistent heading styles, missing page numbers and broken cross-references.
Consistency checks
Spellings, hyphenation, capitalisation, numbers and names are checked against your style sheet, so your book reads as one voice.
Clear corrections
Every change is marked so it is easy to find and apply, whether you edit the file yourself or pass it on to a designer.
Queries, not guesses
When something looks questionable but might be intentional, we ask rather than assume, so your meaning is never altered by accident.
Confidence at upload
Publishing with a clean file means fewer corrections after launch and a better first impression on reviewers and readers.

How it works, step by step
Receive the proof
You send the laid-out PDF or ebook file along with your style sheet, if you have one.
Careful read
A proofreader reads every page slowly, checking text and layout against your approved version.
Mark and query
Corrections are marked clearly and anything uncertain is raised as a query for your decision.
Apply changes
You or your designer apply the corrections. We can assist if you want us to handle that step.
Final check
We verify that corrections were applied correctly and no new problems appeared.

Questions about proofreading
Is proofreading the same as editing?
No. Editing improves structure, style and grammar before layout. Proofreading is the final check of the designed pages for remaining errors and layout problems. It is not a substitute for editing.
Can proofreading replace copy-editing?
Not safely. Proofreaders assume the text has already been edited. If your manuscript has not been copy-edited, we recommend that first.
What format should I send?
A PDF of the laid-out interior is ideal, because that is what readers will see. For ebooks we can also review the final file in a reading app.
Will you find every single error?
No professional can honestly promise that. Proofreading dramatically reduces errors, and a second independent read reduces them further, but small slips can still remain in any book.
How long does proofreading take?
It depends on page count and complexity. We give you a realistic timeline in writing before starting and let you know promptly if anything changes.
